Perhaps worthy of a separate thread...there is a group called the Obon Society. Their purpose is to reunite named items like this with the family in Japan. This mostly involves flags like yours (and mine). I guess the same advice would be proper for the return of items to the family that we have dealt with for years.

Lol I would never donate a flag to them. They sit in a storage area because most of them have no family to be returned to. Plus I’m definitely not going to especially after the absolute hell the Imperial Army put our and other Allied troops and POW’s through.

This will certainly not be donated back, as this is one of my favorite pieces. It is extraordinarily rare to have a flag with capture photo such as this

For the record, I was NOT suggesting or encouraging that the flag or any flag be donated to this Obon Society. I was only informing the Forum that there is a group out there supposedly returning these flags back to the families in Japan. That group may find its way to our forum and hit up those of us who have these flags to be donated. My personal experience with making a donation to a museum was very bad and I will never do it again.

I recently found mention of the veteran in a unit history book! I have also since gotten his dog tags.

“Staff Sergeant Byron B o o s e emptied two rifles into the charging Japanese, killing several, then killed the remaining attacker with a vertical butt stroke.”

This is in reference to a banzai attack. This mention is from around when he got the silver star.

Love this thread! Very cool to see wartime pictures of the flag around its time of capture.

Thank you. I have a lot of artifacts that I like, but this one is my favorite.

I am having it framed with UV glass and acid free backing today along with the capture photo.

there are several other photos in the group that all seem to be taken late in the war on Luzon. The terrain and backdrop of the photos all seem to be around the time this man was cited for the silver star. I could never prove it, but I think it is likely that the flag was captured very late in the war on Luzon - around the mountaintop where most of the photos seem to be taken.

I came across your posting the other day when I was researching my uncle's WWII service. I am trying to put together a photo arrangement of my uncles and father from the same family base for our local museum. I would very much like to correspond with you about this collection. Please email me at [email protected]

Thank you in advance for you help.
