Two unusual finds from last week.

Field table is missing a couple of hinge screws that let the legs fold but in Overall great shape.

The sketch board is missing one brass leg/paper hold piece, pics 6&7.

If anyone has one for parts......also looking for a period correct pencil to accompany the board.69089c15b4aa2543476207bd79ca73ef.jpg93342124ad592280c335debdd2c85197.jpg278c4a7c1face5d7c22a81632a4231dd.jpgfeb69675b6f1998db53401a79c7fb68f.jpga4f3610f485f408c8dad65f044cb7b97.jpg775e09cca21e0d10c0a9543a7a5a736f.jpgab4823534d05cb9a8a09e82a82f62c83.jpg912155e4f6a7155df3d386c187d0b5cf.jpgd09be5d5f45cba8bd261343755c5b91a.jpg78664d8333d063b19c3e15c0b5c7d139.jpga28d3cd4ca4b9e4d6917290402e10323.jpg54de4f45e3fda437b2c19bd32b4a1a28.jpg

Nice finds. Sketch board came in metal box with 3 detachable folding legs, compass, inclinometer, scale, pencils and paper. Just sold mine, here’s a pic of it.

Here's the Sketching Board with the legs and other accessories as found in the metal transport box.

Thanks for showing the complete kit.
When did they stop using this?

I really do not know when this item went out of production nor when it ceased to be issued and/or used but the inventory sheet that was included in my set was dated in the mid to late 1960s or early 1970s.

To echo that date note that the pencil sharpeners in the box are plastic (1 blue & 1 green).

Additionally the cover with straps seem to be made from a more modern rubberized cloth material otherwise the remaining components appear to be pretty much identical as the earliest sets that I have seen.

Any idea if these were used into WWII?
Mine came with a WW2 non-related group.

The Model 1913 Sketching set (chest and components) is shown , described with instructions for use are in FM 21-35 Field Service Pocketbook - Sketching dated 1939.

There are vets reporting that the sets were still in unit inventories on into the 1980s.  Whether they were still being used that late isn't documented.  (They said they mostly used them in public displays or inspections and the sets always drew a crowd of curious onlookers.)

Over time, the military obtained or produced more and better topographical maps which lessened the need for sketching maps in the field and thus the Sketching Kit became unnecessary.
