matmil Posted April 17, 2021 Share #1 Posted April 17, 2021 1 Division helmet named on chinstrap. This was a recent local flea find. Looks old and out of woodwork, I was told 3 holes on side of helmet are for armor facemask attachment. Chin strap C.L.D. 2nd Lt. in lead pencil, also along inside brim where finger points in pencil "1st Division Headquarters", more visible in bright light or flash photo. Blacksmith Posted April 17, 2021 Share #5 Posted April 17, 2021 Is the chinstrap named, or have initials on it? Thank you.

matmil Posted April 27, 2021 Author Share #16 Posted April 27, 2021 After some teeth gnashing I was able to find Charles L Deaver 1LT. There is a good deal of info on his experience on findagrave. Still can't find him on the musters, and perhaps it is his helmet as 2 LT, his rank is 1 LT. , 3rd MG Bn., cited 1 ID 1/1/20 aef citations volume XXIII

I think the shiny finish on your 1st Division helmet was deliberately done for the division's victory/homecoming parades in New York City and Washington, DC. The photo below of 1st Division units parading in NYC in September 1919 shows their shiny helmets. Dennis

I don't think its him (his helmet wouldn't have come back). Probably someone in the Division HQ.

daswrack Posted May 25, 2021 Share #23 Posted May 25, 2021 remember to be careful with those asbestos pads, old helmets often have them rotted open or will rip open with careless use
