91st Bomb Group Collection

 

The 91st Bomb Group (Heavy) of the 9th Air Force was an air combat unit of the United States AAF during the Second World War. Classified as a heavy bombardment group, the 91st operated B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft and was known unofficially as "The Ragged Irregulars" or as "Wray's Ragged Irregulars", after the commander who took the group to England.The 91st Bomb Group is most noted

as the unit in which the bomber Memphis Belle flew, and for having suffered the greatest number of losses of any heavy bomb group in World War II.

Three B-17s of the 91st Bomb group named CHOWHOUND - HELL'S ANGELS - THE EAGLE'S WRATH each had a very limited number of unique patches made in England for just crewmembers. These three patches are quite likely the only surviving examples.They are not just rare, they are the rarest of all types of WW2 bomber patches. These patches were saved by airman Ernest Kiss, 4th man from the left in the top row.
