Mystery letter on WW2 rate: Aviation Branch (V)

I am researching a guy who finished the war as a Chief Torpedoman's Mate.  In the Navy Support log his rate is identified as CTMV.  What does the V stand for.  He is in the Ordnance department, so I am thinking it is some kind of specialty identifier, but don't know.  If anyone knows or knows where to look, I would surely appreciate it.

Chief Torpedoman's Mate V CTMV

Torpedoman's Mate V was established as an Aviation Branch rating in all grades in October 1943. The rating badge was a left-arm version of the Seaman Branch Torpedoman's Mate.
