M18 Green smoke grenade... live...

It's been collecting dust in my garage for far too long.  Was given this about 12 years ago from a buddy in my poker group who said he'd had it for years -- given to him by someone else.  I'm assuming it's at least 30 years old, if not Vietnam vintage.  Just not sure.  I tried to take it out of the cardboard tube, but it's fairly well stuck in there.  I'm hesitant to twist on the fuze assembly or grab ahold of the metal M18 canister w/ channel locks, etc.  I would just cut the cardboard tube, but I'm guessing it adds value.

It's pretty heavy -- so that -- plus the presence of the spoon and pin tell me it's still live....  Feels the same weight as I remember them when I was in the service.  Let me know wh at you think the age is....  The canister seems to have metal tops and bottoms, showing some signs of rust-bubbling.  Top of cardboard has a cosmetic dent/gouge.  I added a zip tie today as an added safety measure while I was trying to coax the M18 out of the cardboard tube.

M18 smoke grenades bring $150-200. Gunbroker usually has them. An HC ( high capacity) now is at $195 with 6 bids. Ship them by UPS ground.

Just make sure you mark it "!FRAGILE! - LIVE GRENADE

Seriously, if they ask if anything is flamable, explosive, etc. like they do at the PO, what does one say with these or live rounds?

I recall they can be shipped from UPS but require a hazmat sticker like ammuntion. Friend has shipped a lot of these and typically has the spoon tied down as seen here. Some he had sent as hazmat some he didnt. I dont recall him ever telling them it was a grenade. Hes also shipped flares etc with basic hazmat label. I know there is a full section on UPS (and the POst office) sites that details such shipments.

As for the gun broker price its like anything. Stuff seems to go high there but put that price on an item at a show where its cash and carry and it wont sell...

Yeah, I'm not walking into any establishment and uttering "I have a grenade.".....   That's a recipe for a bomb-squad encounter that I don't need..  Perhaps stating a "pyrotechnic smoke canister".....   I checked gunbroker, as suggested, and someone who's sold one before said it shipped UPS Ground, as a "HazMat" package.... he told them it was ammunition.  Cost was $20.

UPS, mark package ORDM, contents ammo, it gets shipped ground. I have used UPS hundreds of times as has millions of others.

After more reading, it looks like the correct HazMat code for these are UN0016 (Ammunition, Smoke).  I'll have to call the UPS help line to see how the package needs to be marked.  Seems it will need either a black/white diamond placard, or an orange diamond referencing class 1.3G Explosives.....  Fun stuff.....
