RWW Posted March 21, 2021 Share #1 Posted March 21, 2021 I have seen a couple of these open over the years and always thought they were from a SEEK 2 kit. I just found one in a May 31, 1967 dated set of Navy MK 79 MOD 0 pen flares. I have no idea how long I have had this set of flares, or where I got them. I was looking at them and saw the silver threaded end of the saw / knife in the package. Was this put in the package by Penguin Associates when the flares were packaged, the unit putting the flares in service or where??? The blade is not covered in the orange material and the green vinyl sheath is open on one end. The blade is 3 1/4 long and the overall length is 3 7/8". HUD69 Posted March 21, 2021 Share #2 Posted March 21, 2021 Hi Bob, It is part of the Seek 2 kit and usefull for sparking, but mounts on the pen flare aswell. Could very well be that both parts came together from the same company, but my guess is as good as everyones. See the image mentioning it. RWW Posted March 21, 2021 Author Share #4 Posted March 21, 2021 I looked for that post in Survival Gear, not Field & Personal Gear, I knew I had seen it somewhere. I pulled my SEEK 2 kits and felt through the vinyl packaging of the hacksaw and knife blade. The one in the 1968 kit manufactured by Hope Industries feels the same. The 1967 kit manufactured by ACR Electronics feels like it has a plastic mount that screws into the flare gun rather than the metal one. I knew their uses, my big question is, were they available separately and also packed in Navy pen flare sets in the '67 - '68 time frame or did somebody pull one from a SEEK 2 kit and stick it in the flares??? Does anyone have a picture of an open blade and still have the vinyl packing they can post pictures of? Is there a separate sleeve for the blade inside the labeled outer package? mohawkALSE Posted March 21, 2021 Share #5 Posted March 21, 2021 My thought would be someone pulled it from a SEEK-2 and put it in there. Pretty good spot to keep it too since you can install it on the launcher. No idea on the background of your item but when my father was in Nam, they carried odds and ends of survival kit items in their flight suits and chicken plate pocket. He never had a survival vest and in all his pics I never even noticed any aircraft kits in the Hueys or Loaches. I know he kept at least his RT-10 and a pen flare kit in the chicken plate pocket so maybe this was from someone that did something similar to take only what they thought they'd need vs a whole kit. RWW Posted March 22, 2021 Author Share #6 Posted March 22, 2021 That is a real possibility. That is why I was hoping somebody had an open blade from a Hope Industries SEEK 2 kit and could answer the question about an inner vinyl sheath inside the sealed and labeled outer bag. If there is one, that adds to your thoughts. If not, it raises more questions.
