TheSnake Posted March 6, 2021 Share #1 Posted March 6, 2021 Howdy; I am a new member, and my interest is primarily edged weapons from the WW2 period, as well as a little before and after. I just wanted to post a pic or two, showing my work. Here are two replicas of the USAF aircrew survival knife, both 5" and 6" bladed versions. I hope you enjoy. sundance Posted March 6, 2021 Share #9 Posted March 6, 2021 Beautiful work. I have no clue how you would make these. I know you could probably write a book about how your knives are made but could you give us the nutshell version?

TheSnake Posted March 6, 2021 Author Share #11 Posted March 6, 2021 Thanks for the kind words, all; it helps keep me going! The quick and dirty is I buy bar stock from a couple of suppliers, and after drawing out on paper what I want to make, transfer the design to the metal. After cutting it out on my Milwaukee Porta-Band, I grind it on my 72" belt sander. Next is heat treatment, which is done in my Evenheat computer controlled knife furnace. After hardening, I temper the blade for the desired Rockwell hardness (2 hours twice, at temperature). I put the handle material on, and do the final finishing, usually a satin buffing with a scotch-brite like belt, and then sew the accompanying sheath by hand, usually from 8/9 ounce leather.
