phantomfixer Posted March 2, 2021 Share #1 Posted March 2, 2021 Two helmets stand out, are they modified M1s or a variant of the flak helmet? the insignia on the helmet looks like an 8 ball with wings..
dmar836 Posted March 2, 2021 Share #2 Posted March 2, 2021 They appear to me to be M1s relieved for goggles.
GITom1944 Posted March 3, 2021 Share #3 Posted March 3, 2021 I agree they are probably modified M1s but they are different from other field mods I've seen. Interesting photo. Tom
Radio Operator Posted March 3, 2021 Share #4 Posted March 3, 2021 That's an interesting photo, I agree that M1 on the far right is most likely a one off modification to better fit goggles. If (a big if) it was a prototype for a flak helmet I'd say it would a prototype M5 since it roughly has the same shape as it. Though depending on when this was taken you would expect to see a few M3 flak helmets since they were around before the M5 and any crew looking to use a steel helmet would probably want to use one that was built to accommodate flight gear. P-59A Posted March 4, 2021 Share #5 Posted March 4, 2021 The flak vests are odd too! British?
dmar836 Posted March 4, 2021 Share #6 Posted March 4, 2021 With the external release straps I figured an early version - maybe British.
Paul Reijnders Posted March 7, 2021 Share #7 Posted March 7, 2021 I think both soldiers wear a "modified" M-1 helmets. Regards, Paul
