Jean-Loup Posted February 27, 2021 Share #1 Posted February 27, 2021 I thought this needed to be posted on the US helmet forum. Years ago member Sparky posted the following 517th PIR helmet, claiming to have got it from a family who had visited southern France after the war. OF course the helmet is named to a well known KIA of the unit. IMO it is a fake helmet, and apparently Sparky himself later admited it and posted photos of the process of making this fake on the trigger time forum.... Jean-Loup Posted February 27, 2021 Author Share #2 Posted February 27, 2021 Now, years later, on the WAF forum, someone asks for help to authentify a helmet, that looks rather bogus.
Jean-Loup Posted February 27, 2021 Author Share #3 Posted February 27, 2021 And if we look at the tags....
Dave T Posted February 27, 2021 Share #4 Posted February 27, 2021 Jean Loup, thanks for posting and bringing this up. Also thanks for reposting the original posted photos. When this 91st helmet was posted to WAF the tag immediately reminded me of this 517th helmet and its ensuing saga. Its also worth noting in regards to the 517th helmet...from the old pics you posted..it was missing one of the chinstraps. When the helmet was included on pages 76-77 of "American Paratrooper Helmets" by De Trez it now has both chinstraps!

Paddyd00 Posted February 27, 2021 Share #7 Posted February 27, 2021 Nice catch Jean Loupe. Been a few people creeping around there with bad helmets. Their English is “not very good” and “they don’t collect helmets” are comments they usually thrown in too. Old Tag looks like this may be this person calling card.
