Here is another one of my helmets, the M1917a1 that used to be a M1917. The lot number is ZC675 or something like that. There is a name in the liner but you can’t see it in the pictures. The name itself is hardly legible but it’s named to a man who was in the 3rd Engineer battalion on Honolulu. There is a date also with the name I think it says August 1 1942. The chinstrap is early and the horse hair pad is missing. D459F7EB-A8C5-4F8A-8F8B-7BA40CBF1D69.jpeg.915cffbaa5d13db08b3f434cfc813794.jpeg

Looks like ZC 205, I have never seen a ZC stamped helmet with a lot number over the high 200's. My highest numbered one is ZC 270. I have seen a few WW1 helmets reused in this manner. Nice bonus on the ID.

Helmets made by C with lot numbers higher than 299 always have a steel supplier code of U as far as I can tell.

This one is a nice example with the earlier riveted chinstrap, circa 1934-37.

What do you mean by riveted chinstrap? What does one look for? Thanks

Is this what I've seen referred to as the M1917A Transitional Helmet? refurbished M1917s w- the experimental liners and webbing chinstrap that later became (sans rivets) the M1917A1 (and M1)?

I can not imagine anyone other than a collector breaking it down like that and really can not imagine any user ever issued one calling it anything but a helmet.
