kotkinjs1 Posted February 24, 2021 Share #1 Posted February 24, 2021 Hi all, I recently acquired at auction a post Rev War Springfield musket (dated 1807) and it "came with" a pouch and belt. The auction didn't even list any photos of said pouch/belt, only a brief description. After receiving it I'm now trying to figure out what it is. It's too small for any type of cartridge box (plus, it doesn't have any inserts, only two spaces with a divider) but I don't know enough about this timeframe's uniforms to know anything else. It seems like it might not be a normal 'issue' item as it's more embellished than I'd expect for a regular line soldier in the field. It's got a cannon that's very detailed and a white buff leather belt. I think it's a waist belt vs a shoulder/torso strap due to the smaller size. The black leather of the pouch is very heavily painted(?) or tarred maybe? It's thick and stiff. Similarly, I think the outside of the leather belt was painted white? There's a thick crazing that I think is heavier than what normal, plain leather would do. There are no markings or stamps anywhere. I'm more used to Civil War era leather items so there's always a contract or arsenal stamp so I don't know what to look for here. So, any experts on early 19th century accoutrements can help me identify this? Is it even period or a later copy? Thanks in advance!
Dragoon Posted February 24, 2021 Share #2 Posted February 24, 2021 Hi, It looks to be a Victorian era British Royal Artillery Dress Pouch. I am unable to give exact year or model but further research on-line should give more details. Kurt.

That's 100% more than I knew when I started. 👍 ☺️
