redone Posted February 14, 2021 Share #1 Posted February 14, 2021 I came across this set of chevrons and can not find them in any reference books. They are 50's period blue twill with olive embroidering. Are they errors ? Any thoughts ? Thanks.
patches Posted February 15, 2021 Share #2 Posted February 15, 2021 My first guess would of been that they were the Dress Blues type, and they've been dyed, the Yellow dyed OD, but as we all see the White bobbin threads show all over the place, to include the border. These were adopted in 1955 these ranks, and were Yellow on Army Green, so maybe these are a prototype of some kind doing them in the then current colors of the M1951 ranks, OD on Blue Twill. hardstripe Posted February 15, 2021 Share #3 Posted February 15, 2021 These chevrons are very likely dyed. Before the subdued chevrons were developed for use in Vietnam, soldiers dyed there chevrons so they wouldn't appear so glaring to enemy snipers. some soldiers used black magic marker to "hide" their rank.I have a couple of sets I have procured over the years. Here are a some samples from my collection.
patches Posted February 15, 2021 Share #4 Posted February 15, 2021 That's a very good point hs. The reason perhaps the White Bobbin thread is still White is because it is Poly, which doesn't really dye, and they start to use White Poly Bobbin on all sorts of cloth insignia in the early60s, maybe in some cases a little earlier. One good way to find this out is if member BURNS a White thread to see.

I'm also leaning towards them being prototypes. Thanks for your reply. Redone
