GWS Posted February 7, 2021 #1 Posted February 7, 2021 This maybe the wrong area, but I saw this on Find a Grave Forums under the WW1 section. The plausible answer was that it was copied in error and should read PFC. Thoughts?
patches Posted February 7, 2021 #2 Posted February 7, 2021 I think it's one of those Specialty Ranks, a Plotter 4th Class????? Plotters being of the Coast Artillery.

Justin B. Posted February 7, 2021 #4 Posted February 7, 2021 I haven't been able to find anything 4th class in WW1 pay or organization tables. CAC ratings like plotter and mine planter had extra pay but I believe the men were still listed as PFC, corporal etc. I think this was just an error, should be PFC.

I would tend to agree with your assessment, I've never heard of a fourth class anything associated with the military. Checking his service record will probably provide the answer. Thanks.
Airborne-Hunter Posted February 8, 2021 #6 Posted February 8, 2021 what about private, specialist 4th class? I think this would be a 20's maybe 30's army rate....

Well, there was nothing in the list that Tolzer submitted to support that, so I think someone made a mistake and unfortunately it was put on the marker. A bit surprised nobody caught it at that time. Here's the link: https://www.cem.va.gov/hmm/abbreviations.asp

Yeah, 1920-1942. It seems like there would be a more intuitive abbreviation for that. If you look at he official VA abbreviation list, it seems like that would be "PVT 4 CL SPEC". https://www.cem.va.gov/cem/docs/abbreviations/ranks_army.pdf
