R.Johnston Posted February 12, 2021 Share #2 Posted February 12, 2021 It's a model 1860 Staff officer's sword, but the guard is not regulation. It could be a fraternal sword or a military association sword, but the photo is too fuzzy to make out the design in the center of the guard. Is it a snake coiled around a staff or is it something else? Can you take a clearer photo of the guard and also the pommel? If it is the snake and staff (the Rod of Aesclepius) then it's a medical officer's sword. You say there are no markings on the blade but is there any etching or is the blade completely bare? George48 Posted February 23, 2021 Share #3 Posted February 23, 2021 That is a very interesting Model 1860 staff officers sword having what appears to be the medical insignia on the cross guard. Thanks for showing.

ludwigh1980 Posted June 16, 2021 Share #6 Posted June 16, 2021 My guess would be American made for some South American or Caribbean medical officer. The medical insignia reminds me of Belgian or French medical insignia and oftentimes you will have South American countries with a strong French influence in their military insignia. Just a thought. I also have had early Haitian military insignia (Late 19th Century to early 20th Century) and the styling of this sword reminds of that.
Maxrobot Posted October 3, 2021 Share #7 Posted October 3, 2021 No markings on the blade? Usually M1860 Staff officers swords have acid-etched designs on the blade, or at least a maker's mark. Sometimes the importer mark. This is a pretty-much-standard M1860 sword made in France and imported & sold by the Ridabock co. - a military goods dealer. Note the Eagle design on the pommel too. This Post-war example is little fancy as it has the folding guard and sharkskin grips.
