Post #40 shows then, Major Herbert R. Nusbaum, swearing in a handful of Samoans. I believe Tepulo is the one on the left in which you see him in numerous PR photos. 

 

LTC Nusbaum was the COC for the 6th Marine Defense Battalion from April 30 1945 to July 1 1945. Maybe we can find more photos of the 1st Samoan BN through his name.

This is an interesting patch. Maybe for a second order? A special order? Twill.  This was posted in the Rarest USMC patches thread.

 

Thoughts?

This patch can also be seen on a USMC Women's cold weather hat that Bob Chatt provided an image for in Dressed for Duty: America's Women in Uniform. So this twill style below, is not an actual lava lava patch.
