mkite93 Posted January 29, 2021 Share #1 Posted January 29, 2021 Here is the group to Signalman 3rd class Callahan who went down with the Tug USS Navajo when it was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-39 in September of 1943. Callahan was one of seventeen members of her crew that was lost. Months ago as I was reading Dave’s book I was very interested by the page about another one of the Navajos crew that was lost and thought to myself it was unlikely to ever see another medal to a crewman since it was a ship with only 17 casualties and just so happen to come across this through a collector friend. I am honored to be caretaker of his memory and this very nicely engraved medal.

mkite93 Posted January 29, 2021 Author Share #5 Posted January 29, 2021 Thanks everyone! I thought that as well about the ships dog. As well as him saying the Captain and him were topside first only for the Captain to go back inside the ship probably thinking of his crew first. Salvage Sailor Posted September 18, 2023 Share #12 Posted September 18, 2023 Edward C. Raymer, Salvage Diver at Pearl Harbor was also on the USS NAVAJO in the Solomons. His account 'Descent Into Darkness' about the salvage at Pearl ends with his duty aboard NAVAJO and her sinking in 1943.
