unknown ordnance box

Any help appreciated. Made of metal with wood and felt insert, and wood is "stepped" as if to hold a brass cartridge very securely by it's edge lip. Also, the handle acts as a locking mechanism to hold the lid in place.

What size round dose it hold? It looks like it would be for one of the several European .50 (+ or - ) caliber anti-tank rifles.

The size would help...without measurements I would guess mortar propelling charges ( they are a little longer than the size of a 12 gauge shell.)

37mm cartridges were issued in the standard black fiber containers. Early ones were tan fiber containers. What size is your metal container?
