USMC Tintype

Significantly more rare than Confederate images, this is the third example of a USMC Tintype I've had the pleasure of owning. He wears a 7 button frock coat with base of the collar piping. His gilded over insignia would have shown the distinctive bugle with "M." Unfortunately, I don't think the book title is able to be made out.

Is it my imagination? The buttons and horn almost truly look gold. Almost colorized.

Great image!

Yep, the photographer gilded over the buttons with a gold paint (not sure if it was truly gold or not). The only bad psrt is that we can't see the M in his hat bugle.

Totally correct- two missing buttons can make a world of difference!

The photographer gold tinting is typical of the era.

It is frustrating at times when it obscures key details such as the "M" in the hat brass.

I had Confederate image once where the tint obscured a buckle.  It was an ambrotype.  By looking at the back of the image I was able to see a VA State Seal buckle and get some blow up photographs of the details.
