Found this rare bird at a flea market. Similar to the US WW2 .60 cal experimental round developed for our Air Force in 1944. After the war they necked it down to .50 cal to get 4400 FPS , deemed inadequate, then necked it up to 20mm and our 20mm M51 round was born. It is pictured next to some linked common .50 BMG rounds for scale.75108BF6-A274-44E5-9EEB-5C889585246A.jpeg.07ddee1f5118681604b4cf95c624651a.jpegCE4080B3-DB54-4ADA-8F91-5F5B13D6F719.jpeg.157f5e66843a0de37a2b647ce62acf1d.jpeg1AAE0A14-6D0B-45FD-A370-9B4F61C41A01.jpeg.0e3a9d794951b5299a45a6ea546d2f5a.jpeg

That is a very cool find, and a reminder that I am hanging out at the wrong flea markets......

Thanks for the post.

I have to post more information. The .60 caliber was initially designed for our Army as a high velocity AP round, about 1939. They built two MG’s for testing, but it failed penetration testing. After the Army lost interest as an anti-armor round the Air Corp picked it up for aircraft use. They played with it in .60 and then .50 to increase it’s velocity. Both calibers could not carry enough HE and incendiary to bring down aircraft- but in 20mm it succeeded and is still in use today.

Thanks for the post.

I found a 37mm 1916 round, this and a very nice 76mm 1944 M26 brass case in a flea market near Tampa. The guy had loads of stuff, Colt marked bayonets, the 70’s and modern LAW, a dozen MK2 grenades ( yellow and green) some in the original containers, but I had little cash...
