US Victory Museum Posted January 21, 2021 Share #1 Posted January 21, 2021 Mounted troops accompany outgoing President Woodrow Wilson and newly elected President Warren G. Harding during the 1921 inaugural parade. I found it of interest that the obsolete M1913 "Patton" sabre would make an appearance in 1921. https://www.shorpy.com/node/26041?size=_original#caption

The model 1913 "Patton" Cavalry Saber was manufactured until 1918 with over 35,000 issued. So in 1921 it would only be two years out of production. GWS Posted January 22, 2021 Share #4 Posted January 22, 2021 I could be wrong but the mounted soldier on the left sure looks like George S. Patton! ( Which might also explain the saber.)
GWS Posted January 22, 2021 Share #5 Posted January 22, 2021 Also, Wilson was in very poor health at this time. He had suffered a stroke a couple of years earlier which some medical historians today say was a result of him contacting influenza while he was in France in 1919. for the Paris Peace Conference. He died in 1924. Steve
Spathologist Posted January 30, 2021 Share #6 Posted January 30, 2021 The M1913 saber was issued until 1934, when it was declared obsolete. Units and armories still maintained them in inventory until WWII under authorizations for mob control, and you see some post-1934 photos of them being used, sometimes nickeled, in parades. I attached a couple of pics of the 3d Cavalry's change of command ceremony in 1938. The final order for removal from inventory occurred sometime post-1941, never seen the order so no idea when it was published.
