The weights on the light stand were just enough to keep the hammock from blowing over.

Very nice! I didn't not realize they made these during the VN war, I just have seen the WW II era ones and have a couple.

Always heard they wern't used much, afraid they would get bayonetted in the middle of the night.

These weighed almost 4 pounds so they came up with an M-1966 model Jungle Hammock that was just over one pound. They trapped humidity inside, making them uncomfortable, but then  I would imagine any sleeping system for  jungle combat is not going to be a good night's rest.
