Help with Saber ID

I am hoping that someone here could help ID this Officer’s Saber. I acquired it thinking it was a M1860 Officer’s saber possibly German or French. The flat top of the grip in unlike anything I have ever seen. The blade is unmarked and I do not see a maker’s mark either.

The grip is Sharkskin wrapped and other than the flatness of the grip looks like a Civil War era Officer’s saber. Any help with the ID would be greatly appreciated.

Could you show a closer shot of the drag on the end of the scabbard?

My initial guess would be French made so their drags were very distinctive.  I presume the spine of the blade is flat like the US Heavy Cavalry Saber?  Look on the back spine of the blade for any markings.

Hi Sarge,

I will take some more pictures in about an hour.

Thanks

Excellent pictures.  So, not a regulation French arsenal made sword it seems.  No poncons, different shape exaggerated drag, no markings at all that I can see.  It does not appear to be German made for the American market either from what I can see, including the squared back grip.

It appears to be a nice quality generic European used mounted officer sword from what I can see.  No way to tell if it was used in the American Civil War since it has no US etching or import markings.
