RFH Posted January 9, 2021 Share #1 Posted January 9, 2021 I am hoping that someone here could help ID this Officer’s Saber. I acquired it thinking it was a M1860 Officer’s saber possibly German or French. The flat top of the grip in unlike anything I have ever seen. The blade is unmarked and I do not see a maker’s mark either. The grip is Sharkskin wrapped and other than the flatness of the grip looks like a Civil War era Officer’s saber. Any help with the ID would be greatly appreciated.
SARGE Posted January 10, 2021 Share #2 Posted January 10, 2021 Could you show a closer shot of the drag on the end of the scabbard? My initial guess would be French made so their drags were very distinctive. I presume the spine of the blade is flat like the US Heavy Cavalry Saber? Look on the back spine of the blade for any markings.

RFH Posted January 10, 2021 Author Share #4 Posted January 10, 2021 There may be a makers mark but it is not longer legibl.
RFH Posted January 10, 2021 Author Share #5 Posted January 10, 2021 There may be a single number on the back spine but I can’t tell for sure.
SARGE Posted January 11, 2021 Share #6 Posted January 11, 2021 Excellent pictures. So, not a regulation French arsenal made sword it seems. No poncons, different shape exaggerated drag, no markings at all that I can see. It does not appear to be German made for the American market either from what I can see, including the squared back grip. It appears to be a nice quality generic European used mounted officer sword from what I can see. No way to tell if it was used in the American Civil War since it has no US etching or import markings. Thanks Sarge, I was told another site that they believe its a Belgian Mounted Officer’s saber.
