Very nice display and post! You can follow the machining process and view the fixtures, tools  and gages in a book (title escapes me at this moment) by Springfield Armory. 

I think I see where a PAL fixture got out of adjustment which allowed for the date stamp to be partially hidden. When more than 50% of the date is hidden I cannot tell if it is 1942 or 1943. The tops of the 2 and 3 look the same to me.
