Hi everyone, been awhile since I've posted. I've been in deep with Soviet awards. Came across this shell, after talking to a couple other collectors I believe to be an authentic, but painted over 2nd ID. Thoughts?

Nice helmet and perfect example of what happened to painted M1's at the end of the war when they got "recycled".

Thanks Pat. He'd let me have it for $200. I know it's just a shell but still a neat piece. Not sure what the effort would be like to remove paint or if it's better left as is.

You could take a Q-tip dipped in Goof-off and test a tiny area somewhere on the back rim to see if the paint comes off easy. Goof-off takes acrylic paint right off beautifully without damaging the paint underneath while oil based paints may need more work and patience.

I personally would leave it as is and some of the folks here may say the same. Ultimately, it is your helmet and your decision.

Thanks Pat. That's what I was thinking - test patch or leave as is. It is after all, part of the helmet's history now. I also collect German helmets and those folks lose their minds if you so much as dust them wrong haha.
