The Air Force Remote Combat Effects Campaign Medal was approved by the Secretary of the Air Force on May 22, 2019. This unique campaign medal recognizes USAF personnel who are not deployed to an operational theater but who participate directly in combat operations from a remote location. It is awarded to personnel who fly drones or who operate in cyber, space, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance career fields. To qualify, they must “create direct combat effects from a remote location,” and their operations must lead to the delivery of lethal force. The Air Force Remote Effects Campaign Medal was approved by the Secretary of the Air Force on May 22, 2019. This unique campaign medal recognizes USAF personnel who are not deployed to an operational theater but who participate directly in combat operations from a remote location. Although the recipient must provide "hands-on" employment of a weapons system that has a direct effect on combat operations, he or she must not be physically exposed to hostile action or be personally placed at risk. Although the medal was first awarded in 2019, it may be awarded retroactively for qualifying service on or after September 11, 21001. Its order of precedence follows the Air Force Nuclear Deterrence Operations Service Medal
