hink441 Posted December 13, 2020 Share #1 Posted December 13, 2020 What is this any ideas? Looks like the base/fins are welded??? The fuse looks ok and feels heavy. Is this someone’s fantasy piece or something real??

US Military Guy Posted December 13, 2020 Share #4 Posted December 13, 2020 The paint colors and scheme look like the one in my collection, but it is certainly a different model. The one shown in the bottom right of the photo is longer with the "antenna" (vine looking things). The one in the black and white photo above looks to be more like the one you posted than the one in my collection. Is the one you posted available? Kaptainssurplus Posted December 13, 2020 Share #5 Posted December 13, 2020 Yeah it's a air dropped sensor.
hink441 Posted December 13, 2020 Author Share #6 Posted December 13, 2020 Pretty neat. Here are some more pics I found online. A color picture of the aircrewman tossing one out the door. Some plain white sensors and some mounted on a bomb rack hanging from a jet. I purchased this one at an antique store. What are these sensors valued at? I have never seen one before today. Kaptainssurplus Posted December 13, 2020 Share #7 Posted December 13, 2020 The values I have seen havent been too much over the years. There hasn't been much demand historically for them. At one time there were plenty around in surplus stores selling at retail costs of $60-125. I know that condition and completeness of them will also play a factor in value as well. hink441 Posted December 14, 2020 Author Share #8 Posted December 14, 2020 Looks like mine is an ADSID 1 or ADSID 3 model. Apparently they made around 36,000 (all models) of these sensors for the Vietnam War. Here are some more pics. A chart showing the different types produced, and two pictures of mine showing additional markings. Last is a picture of a Navy Bronco Aviator beside a bomb rack loaded with the short type of sensors.
hink441 Posted December 16, 2020 Author Share #9 Posted December 16, 2020 I noticed the inside area around the fins is made of wood. There are some staples remaining in the wood. It appears the wood was used to attach foliage to the sensor to help camouflage the unit. Chris
