Chuck Yeager

"Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds -
and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of -
wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence.
Hovering there I've chased the shouting wind along
and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air.

"Up, up the long delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,
where never lark, or even eagle, flew;
and, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
the high untrespassed sanctity of space,
put out my hand and touched the face of God."

-Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee, 1941

Rest in Peace.  I grew up absolutely idolizing him, the amount of courage and skill he displayed throughout his career still amazes me.

Met General Yeager a few times over the years, mostly while working at the Museum of Flight. His favorite subjects were fishing and hunting. Being an avid fisherman, we had a couple of nice conversations on the subject, usually at AFAA reunions or symposiums.

I remember when reading his book, how he would sneak off and go I think into the colorado mtns to some remote lake or stream and fish for golden trout. Taking govt transportation to get him there, definitely not authorized

His buddy Bud Anderson and him actually got a bunch of the golden trout from Colorado and used an USAF cargo plane to transport them to a lake in the Sierra Nevada mountains so they would be closer to the fishing.
