Costa Posted December 7, 2020 Share #1 Posted December 7, 2020 arrived today and must say it was fast. as i have it in hand i am leaning to id'ing this lid as navy. on both wings there is S.S. 406 and this is the main reason i lean to navy. target on top has colored rings- green outer, white second and red third. very center being white. very possibly lid could be from a gunner on a sub or ship---- a mystery. The Rooster Posted December 7, 2020 Share #3 Posted December 7, 2020 Nice one Mitch. I checked the crew roster for the sea poacher as they have a nice list of crews by the years starting from commissioning through decommissioning. I worked backwards from 1969 back.... And this might be ? Your guy ? Terry Rush, came aboard in 1968 http://www.seapoacher.com/muster68.htm Rush , Terry ENFN http://www.seapoacher.com/

The Rooster Posted December 7, 2020 Share #6 Posted December 7, 2020 She was active from 1944 to 1969... There could be another Terry that served on her?? There is a crew list for each year from 44 -69 I started at 44 and worked up to 51 and then went to 1969 and found Terry Rush. He also shows up on the 1968 roster. I didnt dig through the entire list. When I found Terry Rush, I stopped looking. Prob still had helmets on her from ww2? Or like Salvage Sailor said in another post, from time to time they got new NOS helmets on board ships and dumped the old ones over the sides. But the Navy had WW2 pots up into the 1990's... The National guard did too. Its an awesome looking Helmet. I bet it is off the sea poacher. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Sea_Poacher

topdcnut Posted December 8, 2020 Share #8 Posted December 8, 2020 Just remember, the Navy does not care about age or vintage just condition, these boats were not front line weapons platforms in the late 60s and early 70's I love this helmet it shows a lot of spunk and funk for a guy stuck on a frickin pig boat. The Rooster Posted December 8, 2020 Share #10 Posted December 8, 2020 The term "pig Boat refers to Pre ww2 smaller subs like the S class subs that had no air conditioning and many had cock roaches etc etc. Those were compared to the barnd new at the time WW2 Fleet subs. Because of the conditions on the older subs, they were referred to as pig boats. The Nuclear Navy prob refered to the WW2 subs as "pig boats as compared to the modern Nuke subs. The Sea Poacher was the first to recieve the upgrade to a guppy type submarine. Its an awesome helmet Mitch !
Paddyd00 Posted December 8, 2020 Share #11 Posted December 8, 2020 Nice pick up Friend. I saw this for sale. Defintely an interesting and great one. I collect and Navies and I was wondering if there was something "Souvenir-y" about this one. Painted after the war to remember his time aboard the ship / participation in the war. Just seemed too "busy" to me for him to have that on a ship. Just a gut feeling though as many things are when we try to decipher these. Doesnt look VN to me either. WW2 all the way. Thanks for posting Z
