Blackhawk Posted December 5, 2020 Share #1 Posted December 5, 2020 Hi, I was wondering when the camo poncho was issued to the USMC? I just saw a camouflaged poncho from a dealer which is described as 1941 USMC poncho!? Do you know camo ponchos dated that early? Keystone Posted December 5, 2020 Share #2 Posted December 5, 2020 I have two 1940 dated USMC ponchos, both OD. I don't think I've ever seen a 1941 dated poncho. I do have shelter halves with NOM contract dates around 1941 and a DQP 1941-1942 dated shelter but they are all khaki. I would assume the camo ponchos were first issued about the same time as the camo shelters around 1942. Tim
Keystone Posted December 5, 2020 Share #3 Posted December 5, 2020 I stand corrected! There was a 1941 dated poncho posted a few years ago.
Blackhawk Posted December 5, 2020 Author Share #4 Posted December 5, 2020 Thank you very much for the reply! Here's a picture of the camo poncho I mean. I can't read very much, only the "41" but now I guess this would be something else then the date. Also maybe not USMC but USN!? pararaftanr2 Posted December 6, 2020 Share #5 Posted December 6, 2020 From what I can see in your photo, the poncho is USN, not USMC, and has an appropriate Navy contract number with a "NXss" prefix and five digit number, so is not from 1941. doyler Posted December 7, 2020 Share #7 Posted December 7, 2020 The earliest camo dated poncho I have seen is 1942. I recall seeing a article that said that he camo ponchos were first seen in 1942 or began production then.
Blackhawk Posted December 7, 2020 Author Share #8 Posted December 7, 2020 Thanks! I think I have also seen the earliest camo poncho with 1942 stamp. Best regards, Lukas
'Flage Guy Posted December 9, 2020 Share #9 Posted December 9, 2020 Here is my 2 cents worth...it seems that the O.D. Poncho was produced up into 1942.
'Flage Guy Posted December 9, 2020 Share #10 Posted December 9, 2020 Here is another couple of Ponchos, both made by Archer Rubber and both having the same date. The first Ponchos were produced in the standard Frogskin color scheme (lower Poncho below), but in September of '42 it was requested that the colors be modified into the shades more commonly seen (upper Poncho); all colors were reversed on the jungle side in the various spots- brown spots green, and green spots brown (Re.: "Grunt Gear", pg. 89). Blackhawk Posted December 10, 2020 Author Share #12 Posted December 10, 2020 Thanks for showing! I like the lighter camo poncho very much. Great item!
'Flage Guy Posted December 11, 2020 Share #13 Posted December 11, 2020 Those "original" camo Ponchos are really tough to come by! You have to "Pay The Price" for them, but they're worth it it, IMHO 😊
