dustin Posted November 21, 2020 Share #1 Posted November 21, 2020 Ens. Rogers, while aboard the USS Manila Bay, presented with a purple heart for injuring himself during a storm sometime in August 1944. It must had been a pretty bone-headed circumstance for this type of elaborate joke. Perhaps the carrier had a running "purple heart club" kind of like pubs or restaurants have challenges and you get your picture taken and your name on a plaque. A tavern around here has a Wing King challenge, and if you break the standing record you get your mug-shoot with a sash and a crown. The quality of construction of the heart assembly leads me to believe this is the case.
Allan H. Posted November 25, 2020 Share #2 Posted November 25, 2020 How come this one isn't in Dave's book "Sacrifice Remembered? 😆 Great photo. I would agree, the medal probably moved from sailor to sailor each time someone made a booboo. Allan
