Cap Camouflage Pattern I

I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure its a repro.

The excellent condition already got me on edge, originals are quite rare and are usually in poor shape, and plenty of repros exist and sell for around $20.

The Xuong IB stamp is another red flag. Most if not all original covers were unmarked, and on top of that the Xuong IB stamp is commonly found on fakes. I don't think anyone knows for sure what the Xuong IB stamp is, but common speculation is it was the a property mark applied to original uniforms by a Vietnamese movie studio in the 80s. Whatever it is fakers have long been applying it to their fakes and now it is far more likely to find a fake than an original with one.

I also think most BDQ camo covers are "long flap" but I'm not confident on that.

Hopefully someone who is lucky enough to have handled real BDQ uniforms can comment on the fabric and print.

These came out of a Hanoi movie / costume property room in the late 80's.

Have never heard them called a fake before.

A batch of these NOS helmet covers? Or Xuong IB stamped items?

Bob,

Did the studio make their own covers or did they use original captured items and put their stamp on it?

That's really interesting.  Bob, do you have a source for that? One theory I have is that the North took the covers as captured materials and had one of their Communist named factories (Factory 1B) inspect and mark the covers. Some time after that they ended up with a movie company.

I am looking for all my photos showing the captured uniforms and gear, but all I can find is this one right now.

These are all captured US & ARVN flak vests just sitting on shelves in Hanoi.

Can't add to the Communists factory theory as these never showed up on the market until Vietnam started opening up a bit and a few enterprising individuals went into all the prop / costume houses they could find in the North.

I was talking to Kammo-man today telling him I was looking for the rest of the costume house photos, and he reminded me that I had loaned them to him.

Hopefully he will post some of them.
