Size 4, US Ensign, 45 Star

Here are a few photos of a recently acquired Size 4 US Ensign. It is in really good shape with just a few moth bites and small rips. It measures approximately 12’ x 24’. There is a well sewn canvas header with Manila/hemp rope. Due to wear and grime I am unable to discern any visible markings. It’s a big one, and is the largest I currently own.

Yery nice. That is in beautiful shape for 100 plus years old. I take it that it would have flown over a fort or a base.

Thanks. Based on the measurements I believe this is a naval No 4 size ensign so it would have been used on a ship or navy base. Army flag measurements do not correspond to this size. A garrison flag is quite a bit larger and the next Army post flag was much smaller. And it comes from a navy officers estate.

A Navy #4 measures 12.19' by 23.16'. I doubt it will measure up exactly to that, after all it is wool and aged. Ever wear wool pants in the rain?  I have a #4, my largest, it's a monster. Very cool flag. Did you get any info on the ship?
