I wonder how many badge variations of the same rating for WWII one could find?

What a great topic of discussion!

Depends on how you define "variations." We had many types of rating badges during WWII including Blue, White, Khaki, Green, Gray, Silver, Gold, etc.

Whining each types, there were sometimes variation, such as for each Aviation Pilot there were straight gold wind, curved gold wing, straight wing of the thread color of the eagle, and curved wing of the thread color of the eagle. All four represented the same rating (save those that believe the curved wing represented USCG and straight wing USN).

Looking into this premise using Aviation Machinist's Mate and Pharmacist's Mate might be enlightening.

This is precisely my thought. Within a specific period, the variants could be substantial when factoring in material, back markings (mfrs. and dates), embroidered vs applied chevrons, and of course materials (uniform colors, fabrics).

There are some ratings that will have more due to the DM pattern variations as David Minton pointed out with the NAP badges. There are others (MM comes to mind). It could get to be a rather detailed exploration into individual ratings to then seek the RRG of each sub-category.
