phantomfixer Posted November 1, 2020 Share #1 Posted November 1, 2020 Fs SB Schlueter HS 355A with remnants of original chin straps...and what I think is the 3rd Infantry Division markings on the left side... In black...all I have seen on the net is the blue and white marking... Did not notice the stencil until I got home....found at the local flea market... Any input on being the 3rd? And WWII style stencil? Thanks for any input
P-59A Posted November 2, 2020 Share #2 Posted November 2, 2020 That is interesting. Do you have any thoughts as to why those two smudges are their?

Looks like the smudges on the side are from M1’s stacking on top of each other. interesting helmet, maybe a stealth insignia to reduce visibility? P-59A Posted November 2, 2020 Share #4 Posted November 2, 2020 To be sure that is what crossed my mind. I really try to pick helmets apart when I see them, but I'm stuck trying to find flaws on yours. And you are right, those two smudges do line up with the bail of another helmet being stacked on it. What is the lot number?
phantomfixer Posted November 2, 2020 Author Share #5 Posted November 2, 2020 Heat stamp..under a lens looks to be 305A..not 355A...
shadawg Posted November 2, 2020 Share #6 Posted November 2, 2020 there appears to be a shadow of full insignia, kinda making me think that it was mostly previously removed
P-59A Posted November 3, 2020 Share #7 Posted November 3, 2020 I'm thinking post WW2 done. Subdued is a late 60's thing, but maybe this has roots in Korea. Just a thought until someone has another idea.
phantomfixer Posted November 3, 2020 Author Share #8 Posted November 3, 2020 I was thinking post war too...was hoping the m1 guys would chime in... Shadawg...the square looks brighter green than the rest of the helmet now that you mention it... Thanks for the input guys
huntssurplus Posted November 3, 2020 Share #9 Posted November 3, 2020 Subdued insignia similar to this first started seeing use in Korea. Mostly see black paint like that used for rank insignia though. I have a helmet with similarly crude insignia except its for staff sergeant rank on the front of the helmet. I would not be surprised if maybe a similar practice was used for the 3rd ID as bright white and blue paint would be a nice target for Chinese and North Korean snipers...
