AZPhil Posted October 29, 2020 Share #1 Posted October 29, 2020 Hello All, I have been seeing some helmets with officer rank attached to the helmets. I see some say soldered, But the helmet is steel. So how did they do it with out damaging the finish on the rank? Semper Fi Phil
Dave G Posted October 29, 2020 Share #2 Posted October 29, 2020 Excellent question to which I have no answer. Often wondered the same.
huntssurplus Posted October 29, 2020 Share #3 Posted October 29, 2020 I think often a hole would be drilled into the helmet and the rank insignia attached like that. Obviously not every time and it was a case by case basis. I am an amateur collector of US military items of the 20th century. Looking for items related to: -The Aleutian Island Campaign of WW2, Alaskan Theater, Alaska Defense Command, and more specifically the Battle of Attu -Items related to the 50th Combat Engineer Regiment/Battalion -Items related to Wheelus Air Force Base Libya, particularly from 1957-1960 -WW2 items belonging to service members from Northern Virginia -WW2 Uniforms (all branches and services) -Cheap/Throwaway WW2 named uniforms -Smaller WW2 Groupings -7th Infantry Division Items -WW2 Photos and Letters (all branches, theaters, services, etc) ^^ PM ME!! gap Posted October 29, 2020 Share #4 Posted October 29, 2020 I have a helmet that had a full bird colonel insignia attached with horsehide glue. The insignia had long since fallen off but the glue and outline of eagle was still visible.
aef1917 Posted October 29, 2020 Share #5 Posted October 29, 2020 I once had a WWII m1 with welded-on captain's bars and I have a WWI m1917 with captain's bars affixed with hide glue.

AZPhil Posted October 30, 2020 Author Share #8 Posted October 30, 2020 Thanks Marty, It was the helmet that Patches posted that broke the camels back and I had to ask. I've done metal work. I know the heat required to braze and silver solder ,but the rank always retains its Silver/Gold finish. Do they Heatsink the rank?? Not having an example to study I thought I would ask the expert here, Semper Fi Phil To hear some were glued is also an interesting method.
