The buttons are Navy and it looks like some are missing. Shoulder boards indicate an admiral. Has a name but I can’t make it out. Any idea of specifics beyond that?

Somebody has taken a navy peacoat and turned it into something completely made up. For a play, maybe.

I was thinking along the same lines, maybe a bridge coat modified for a stage production. I wanted to bounce it off of y’all before I burst his bubble.

The buttons on the coat are post 1941 and Stars in the shoulder have not been used since the Civil War. So, made up for a theater or play.

Thanks folks!  I have notified the owner. He seems decent. I identified a Navy LTjg’s uniform for him and he asked me to identify this one. He appears to dabble in general antiques with a few military items sprinkled in. Seems innocent enough.

Set up to be a Civil War army major general's (2 star) uniform (3 button clusters per side as per regulation).

Major General Winfield Scott Hancock;

The owner hasn’t listed it. If he does, hopefully he’ll list it accordingly.

I think anyone who collects military uniforms (either navy or CW) will recognize that this is a theatrical costume. It's not going to "fool" anybody, or at least it shouldn't.

Interestingly, they also used USN line officer stars for the general's stars.
