Help With Pre WWII (?) Named USMC Sgt. Uniform

Recommended Posts

I recently picked up this uniform (and tie) from a retired Marine (pre-Vietnam).  He had a number of WWII era USMC uniforms including this one.  He said he was given most of these uniforms by a friend who owned an antique store.

The name and initials inside read CWS and C.W. Shisler.  I looked up the name and it appears that it belonged to a General Claire W. Shisler who started out as an EM in 1932 but became an officer and served in WWII with great valor (http://ourcountrysheroes.blogspot.com/2015/09/brigadier-general-clair-w.html).

Is this a pre WWII USMC uniform and tie?  Are the Sgt. stripes also pre WWII USMC?  Finally, it appears that the EGAs are NOT matched and are slightly different from each other.  Neither has any markings on the back.  When do they date from?  Any idea why they are different?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Nice uniform, typical 1930’s vintage uniform, stripes, etc. these uniforms were adopted in 1926 when it changed from standing collar. The ega’s are typical WWII vintage. You sometimes see the earlier droop wing ega’s in this uniform, and I would be tempted to put s pair on it. I would take a look at his muster rolls and see when he was a Sgt. Hopefully it fits in for this time period (1926-WWII). I like it.

I am eagerly collecting Pre-WWII USMC material. Any Marine Corps Span Am era, WWI, Banana Wars, or China Marine related material is especially sought after.

Many thanks for the information.  According to the link above, he enlisted in the USMC in 1931 and became an officer in 1937, so the time is definitely right.
