5thwingmarty Posted October 12, 2020 Share #1 Posted October 12, 2020 I recently picked this up. It is a cardboard B-17F pilot training aid that depicts the instruments and controls in the cockpit. It was made to be set up on a table like a scaled down 3D cockpit. Laying flat like this it is about 4-ft by 5-ft. I'm trying to figure out how to display it, whether flat like this or in a box mounted like it would have been when being used. Marty
B-17Guy Posted October 13, 2020 Share #2 Posted October 13, 2020 That very cool Marty! Those are still used today in jets during initial training in a new type. Commonly know today as the “Paper Tiger”. Some types have gone to E training, where everything is in your iPad, which is great. I used to carry a shoulder book bag full of manuals that weighed a ton, when I would have initial or recurrent training. Now, I go with an iPad, notebook and pencil 😜 I have never seen a paper tiger for the 17, glad you found it! John
5thwingmarty Posted October 14, 2020 Author Share #3 Posted October 14, 2020 Thanks John. Another friend told me he had these when he was training for commercial jets, including the 747. He said he had them for a long time but threw them away a few years ago. I'm guessing the B-17 you fly has a bit more modernized panel.
