Found this old helmet.

I think it is a WW1 helmet refitted to the M1917A1.

Has a laundry mark D0750 and a name Teddy Glenn

The Glenn name goes under the pad.

Is this a helmet that was used in early WW2?

Comments welcome.  I know very little about this type.

Nice helmet and great condition too!

Yes, these were used prior to WW2 and early WW2 in the Pacific prior to the M1 being issued.

Looks like this may be your guy;

I thought the letter in the laundry mark was a D but it must be a G distorted because the number matches.

I do not think he enlisted in 1946 though.  He would have been 37.  A little old to enlist.

Think that is a typo?

Thanks for the info.

He almost certainly re-enlisted in '46, into the National Guard.

I've been fooled by this before, but have noticed it is somewhat common to see 1946 as enlistment dates in the online databases, when they are really re-enlistments. You should try to get his file and to see what unit he served in.

Thank you all for the comments.

Looks like I now have a research project.

I read the NPRC is not fully open and it may take a while.

Anyone know of a different way to find out what outfit this guy was in?

One more question, should I treat the leather with something?  it is dry.

The leather looks to be in much better condition than most M1917A1's I've seen. I would leave it alone. Treating it may damage or alter it and you'd want to keep it all original.

You can try maybe an Ancestory search of his name to see if an obituary pops up or if his name shows up in old newspaper articles that may confirm his unit.

I've got some  help looking this guy up.

If he enlisted in Feb 42 then he was 32 almost.

Would he have been issued such an early helmet?

Is it possible he had enlisted earlier?

The release dates are odd also...

Anyone seen this before?

According to these records, he re-enlisted in January 1946, so I think the dates you show are probably accurate. Looks like he went into the National Guard after the war. With an initial enlistment date of February '42, I think it is entirely possible he would have been issued this instead of the M1. Although he would have eventually switched over to the M1. The M1 didn't start production until spring 1941.

Like Jason said....

I would not put anything on the leather. Doing that will alter it beyond repair. It could also darken the leather, leave it greasy or tacky and it could damage the Laundry marks. Leave the whole thing as is would be the thing to do.

Just picked up this one myself. Although I’ve been reducing my collection for a few months, I couldn’t resist this Kelly. ❤️
