viking4zero Posted October 9, 2020 Share #1 Posted October 9, 2020 I've been told this is an experimental parachute flare, it has an unusual pull type ignition system.
viking4zero Posted October 9, 2020 Author Share #2 Posted October 9, 2020 The "trigger" resembles the M5 "Mousetrap" firing device, but is a pull-release type
RWW Posted October 10, 2020 Share #3 Posted October 10, 2020 They were used in early survival kits. The manual refers to them as a "Signal, distress, red star, parachute flare, Type M-131 (T-66E-1)" The description says: "Hand held; altitude 1500 ft." "Primarily a nighttime distress signal. Penetrates ground fog, ice haze, jungle. It shall be optional to replace one or more MK-13 signals with the M-131 signal." I have a couple of them, both dated 1953. One opened and the other still sealed.
