I first read about Lt William Deane Hawkins of El Paso Texas when my parents gave me a copy of "The Fortunes of War" for Christmas in 1964. An amazing story of an amazing man. I don't think there was a Marine in WW2 more deserving of the MOH. And as was often the case, it was awarded posthumously. "Hawk" died on Betio Island during the second night of the assault.
