albatrosdva Posted September 22, 2020 Share #1 Posted September 22, 2020 I know Whitehead & Hoag is a well known button/badge maker. This badge, for lack of a better word, is pasted in a WWI photo album from an unnamed US Navy veteran. The slits on either side make me think it had a ribbon that ran around a sleeve or hat or something. My suspicion is it is for a hat as I cannot believe celluloid would survive as an armband. Those are my suppositions. What do you all think?
cwnorma Posted September 22, 2020 Share #2 Posted September 22, 2020 It is a hostess armband. I have seen them before and also in period photos. It wasn't intended to hold up for daily wear but instead for a single use event or function. similar to a "Hello My Name Is: ____________" badge. There would be an elastic or herringbone tape passed through the two slits for wear. Chris
albatrosdva Posted September 23, 2020 Author Share #3 Posted September 23, 2020 That's interesting, Thank you Chris. I couldn't find one on ebay or anywhere. Are they rare?
cwnorma Posted September 27, 2020 Share #4 Posted September 27, 2020 I don't really pursue WW1 women's items as much as I used to, so I can't say beyond what you noted above. I would say they are seldom encountered.
