It is a quarter plate of a cavalry drummer. I don't own it any more. Scott Scott this is such a crazy rare image on so many levels. Thanks for showing us! Really awesome! USCapturephotos Posted October 22, 2020 Share #54 Posted October 22, 2020 Oh man. What an incredible image! I have had very few Rebels over the years. I had one ambro years ago where you could clearly see the Block I buttons but I traded that one. Thanks for sharing with us. Paul
ramram Posted November 6, 2020 Author Share #55 Posted November 6, 2020 Picked up a couple of ninth plates. Rob M First guy is wearing a Zouave style jacket but can’t figure out which regiment he might be in. Second image is a neat Reb image with some wipe marks but wearing a great ostrich plumed hat. BILL THE PATCH Posted December 5, 2020 Share #60 Posted December 5, 2020 Actually it was very common to photograph the dead back in the day. Families would have whole books with photos of dead relatives. Called the book of the dead. But i never saw a dead civil war soldier laid out before. ramram Posted December 5, 2020 Author Share #61 Posted December 5, 2020 Very true, it was often the only chance to get a photo of a child after their premature death. As far as soldiers, there are reportedly only 8 post mortem hard images including this one. Rob M
USCapturephotos Posted December 5, 2020 Share #62 Posted December 5, 2020 I know post mortem images are fairly common...just not post mortem images of Civil War soldiers. I have been collecting Civil War and other American military images for almost 30 years now and have never seen a post mortem Civil War soldier for sale..maybe just one or two shown in Military images magazine. Great to see this one. Paul

Paul Hey Paul, Tennessee would be the leading candidate based on the uniform type. There is also a name scribbled in the back of the case but it's tough to fully make out and I haven't had any luck matching up possibilities yet. While this old salt might have served in the Civil War, his image post- dates the Civil War by 25+ years! With very rare exception, cabinet cards post date the Civil War.
