kfields Posted September 6, 2020 Share #1 Posted September 6, 2020 I bought this small sealed box of bore brushes this weekend at a flea market. What are these for? Box is tiny - 4 x 1 3/4 x 3/4 inch. Thanks!
Kaptainssurplus Posted September 6, 2020 Share #2 Posted September 6, 2020 It says right on the box what they are for, .30 cal firearms.

Kaptainssurplus Posted September 6, 2020 Share #4 Posted September 6, 2020 During and around WW2 model numbers would have many meanings, so M2 is the model of brush, but M2 meant many things, as did M1 for example. It was a terrible system that they used, as there were many model numbers reused and could be many different items. Someone could say, hey I need an M1, ok which M1? The helmet, the rifle, the tank ,etc.
72psb Posted September 7, 2020 Share #5 Posted September 7, 2020 Since boxed 30-06 ammo was labeled "Cal 30 M 2",I would think it would be for weapons that fired this round.
kwill Posted September 7, 2020 Share #6 Posted September 7, 2020 Good also be used for .30 carbine.

dalbert Posted September 15, 2020 Share #10 Posted September 15, 2020 The M2 designation refers to the brush itself, and not the M2 ammo, or the M2 Carbine. It is consistent with designations for other items. BRUSHES, CLEANING, CAL. .30, M2 - This tells you it's a brush, for cleaning, it's .30 caliber, and Model 2 (There must have been an earlier brush) It's an item with a specific purpose that is not a spare part. Some other M2 examples: Browning Machine Gun, Caliber .50 HB, M2 Browning Machine Gun, Caliber .30, M2 U.S. Carbine, Caliber .30, M2 Propellant, White Bag, M2 Charge, Propelling, M2 Mortar, 60mm, M2 Cartridges, Ball, Caliber .30, M2 Armor, Flyer's Vest, M2 Knife, Pocket, M2 Launcher, Grenade, M2 Pistol, Pyrotechnic, M2 Gun, Submachine, Caliber .45, M2 The designation "BRUSHES, CLEANING, CAL. .30, M2" is similar to the noted examples. I also found the item listed in SNL B-4 for the M1917 Rifle, dated 17 July 1944, which lists it as a Company Accessory for the M1917, along with Case, Cleaning Rod, Cal. 30, M1. Here is a photo of the listing: David Albert [email protected]
