27Division18 Posted September 1, 2020 Share #1 Posted September 1, 2020 Is this a WW2 HBT cap? used by Army, Marines? Label gone. Thanks
doyler Posted September 2, 2020 Share #2 Posted September 2, 2020 Looks like the early short brim Army pattern. You will see some worn by the USMC as well as the USMC didn't have a hbt cover until the 1944 pattern. The Army pattern has a seam in the front panel and shorter brim. The 44 pattern USMC lacks the center seam (where the ega is stenciled) and had the longer brim. There is still lacking documentation if the USMC had contracted any of the short brim caps or just procured them from the Army. Typically the short brim caps have the Army pattern hbt weave but there have been examples of short brim caps in the USMC weave I recall.
MattS Posted September 2, 2020 Share #3 Posted September 2, 2020 Generally speaking, if there's a seam front and center, it was army. If the front is flat, it's USMC (but not always). I think these HBT caps were superseded by the M1943 cap that was introduced with the M1943 uniforms. The style of the M1943 carries on yet today as the current patrol cap is almost the same design, although I think the flip down earflap has been deleted and Velcro added to the rear.
