patches Posted August 29, 2020 Share #1 Posted August 29, 2020 Wasn't aware Jan Micheal Vincent was in the Army, starting Basic November 29 1965, he entered for the National Guard and served till 1971, he was a helicopter mechanic and took his AIT at Ft Rucker Alabama, no real info other than that. As he was in the California NG in Los Angeles I suppose he was as a guess in the 40th Armored Division's aviation unit the 140th Aviation Battalion. patches Posted August 29, 2020 Author Share #4 Posted August 29, 2020 But what has me scratching my head is that when his shot Tribes, like in the Spring early Summer of 1970 (Shown on T.V. November 1970) is he has his own very long hair right, we see it being blown in the wind as he's riding on the buss and sticks his face in the open window as he's heading to San Diego, we see it being shaved off in the film when the Boots get their Burrhead. But at that time. late 1969-early 1970, he was still serving in the Cailf NG, was he not actively drilling after a point??? Cause with a head of hair like that, he clearly had not gotten a haircut in a long time for it to be that long. In a online Bio on him, where I got this dates and Ord and Rucker Info, says he served in a "Reserve Capacity" till 1971, not sure what that means, maybe that he was still carried on the muster, but was excused duty only in case of a Federal Call Up??? patches Posted August 29, 2020 Author Share #5 Posted August 29, 2020 Even in the 1969 film The Undefeated his hair is long, though not like it was in Tribes
patches Posted August 29, 2020 Author Share #6 Posted August 29, 2020 An amendment on his parent unit at any rate, if he was in fact in the 40th Armored Division, then after January 1968 it will now be the 40th Armored Brigade, 40th Armored division inactivated 29 January 1968 with the brigade formed instead. 12thengr Posted August 29, 2020 Share #8 Posted August 29, 2020 Not unusual to see 'longhaired' guardsman in the 1970's.

That's real long hair I agree that in the earl-sh 70s there were NG with real long hair, this from around 1972.

12thengr Posted August 30, 2020 Share #11 Posted August 30, 2020 Long hair was not really unknown in the regulars in the "70's either, they kept after you a bit more. As for the back story; well let's just say I was under official review and I did have to lose the beard. First and last time I ever got a shave from a professional how some ever! :
Unicorn Posted November 5, 2020 Share #12 Posted November 5, 2020 As shown, hair standards weren't very strictly enforced back then. In a "reserve capacity," just means not on active duty. The Reserves, and the National Guard are a Reserve of the US Army, so anyone not on active orders is in a reserve capacity. Normal drilling Reservists and Guardsman.
