U.S Air Force Colonel Uniform (WW2/Korea Vet)

Recommended Posts

Recently got this uniform from the grandson of the veteran. Named to Col Lewis Nichols. He was a Quartermaster in the Army Air Force. He served with the CBI. Later served in Korea. Also got a bullion Burma Star Assoc patch with he was a member since 1989.

I’m not sure why he was awarded a BS and AM. I’m going to pull his records. Unfortunately I don’t see a name however I purchased it from his grandson. It’s also the uniform he’s wearing in the photo.

thanks,

Andrew

Very nice!

Regarding the bronze star, don't forget it was often awarded for meritorious service (since the original meritorious service medal the Purple Heart, ended up being awarded for wounds and deaths). This is why they began to make the distinction of the 'V' device, but the USAF did not use the 'V' until much, much more recently. So it could be a meritorious award or it could be a valor award, with a USAF guy the only way to be sure would be to order a copy of his record (or ask the family if they have copies). Unfortunately, right now the archives are closed except for very urgent requests, so you may be in for a long wait if you try to order them.

Very true.  My mother-in-law ran an aircraft logistics shop in Thailand and was awarded a Bronze Star for her effort.  An aside...  Is the visor cap his as well?  It lacks "farts and darts".

Looking for items related to the Ninth Coast Artillery District and 6th Coast Artillery Regment

Yes the cap is his as well. It might be one from earlier in his career not sure. I’m still trying to work out a deal on the rest of his items maybe his grandson still has the other cap.

Thanks,

Andrew
