Deangreen Posted August 25, 2020 Share #1 Posted August 25, 2020 Can anyone ID this helmet and when it was likely used? I could not find any markings on the helmet, but found some on the accompanying oxygen mask.....MS-22001 with connector type MC-3 and Navy S/N R83MS-22016 on the connector. phantomfixer Posted August 25, 2020 Share #2 Posted August 25, 2020 Nice early helmet....Looks to be a USN APH-5, chin strap cut off, and no provisions for a mask connection...here is a great link for flight helmet research http://www.salimbeti.com/aviation/helmets.htm

Vark_07 Posted September 12, 2020 Share #4 Posted September 12, 2020 It indeed seems to be an early type APH-5 with the chin strap cut off. No "cristmas tree" / "elephant ears" or T-bayonet external attachments for the mask confirms the hint that your helmet is prior to these latter improvements, the slick-looking round visor knob is characteristic of the early versions too. Also, the metal Y-yoke rigid retention fitted on your MS-22001 is supposed to be fastened with stud buttons to leather tabs that come out of each side of the helmet - that are unfortunately missing too. Nice-looking find though, it shouldn't be too hard nor expensive to find the missing straps and restore its glory .
